US Envoy Scheduled to Confer with Zelenskyy, EU Leaders in Berlin

In a key diplomatic initiative, the former US president’s special envoy is slated to meet with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders in Berlin this weekend, while Washington advocates for a workable plan to end the ongoing hostilities.

Diplomatic Discussions and Truce Planning

Germany announced it is hosting US and Ukrainian delegations for preliminary talks regarding a potential halt in fighting, before a more extensive summit involving EU officials and President Zelenskyy planned for Monday. In a speech to the nation, Zelenskyy affirmed the impending engagement with the US representative Steve Witkoff: “Most importantly, I will be conferring with representatives from President Trump, and there will additionally be meetings with our allies in Europe, with numerous leaders, concerning the foundation of a lasting peace – a political agreement to stop the war,” he declared.

Russian Conditions for a Ceasefire

Meanwhile, Kremlin senior diplomat Yuri Ushakov restated that Moscow would only give its blessing to a cessation of hostilities once Ukraine’s military leave parts of the eastern oblast they still control. Ushakov stated that Moscow’s security forces and national guard troops would be stationed in sections of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas even if the area were to become a DMZ under a future settlement – a condition viewed as unacceptable for Ukraine.

Nighttime Assaults Hit Ukraine's Critical Systems

Amid a separate escalation, Russia attacked multiple Ukrainian regions overnight, aiming at the nation’s power and maritime facilities, as stated by President Zelenskyy. He reported the assaults employed more than 450 unmanned aerial vehicles and 30 rockets. As the mercury close to zero degrees, the minister of internal affairs, Ihor Klymenko, reported over a million people were left without electricity.

Furthermore, an attack on the coastal hub of Odesa led to grain silos catching fire, as stated by a senior Ukrainian official Oleksiy Kuleba. Local officials stated that two individuals were injured in attacks on the wider region.

Defense and Humanitarian Updates

Amid increasing anxieties about the threat from Russia, Germany stated it will send a military contingent to Poland to assist with a initiative to strengthen the country’s border with Belarus. Poland, a staunch ally of Ukraine, revealed intentions last year to secure a long stretch of its border. The primary role of the German soldiers will be “construction and engineering work,” a military representative clarified.

In a different incident, about 480 people were evacuated from a train traveling between the city in Poland of Przemysl and Kyiv after police received a report concerning a potential danger. No one was hurt, and officials provided no further details on the nature of the threat. Poland's authorities remain on high alert since several incidents to sabotage rail traffic on the line connecting Warsaw to the Ukrainian border.

In other news, Ukrainian naval officials accused Russian forces of deliberately targeting a commercial ship from Turkey transporting cooking oil to Egypt with a UAV on Saturday. The navy reported the ship ‘VIVA’ was hit but able to continue its journey, with none of the 11 crew wounded.

Finally, Kyiv received 114 captives freed by Belarus on Saturday, according to the country’s PoW coordination centre. The freed individuals will receive healthcare, and any Belarusian citizens who choose will be relocated to Poland or Lithuania.
