Mystery Pink Slime on Remote Tasmanian Coast Spurs Anxiety of Possible Algae Outbreak

Authorities in the island state are striving to determine a rosy sludge that has appeared on a remote shoreline, with some scientists anxious it could be an algae outbreak.

Broad Occurrence Across Beaches

The rosy-colored ooze appeared along a section of a southern bay about 60 kilometers south of Hobart. A comparable ooze has also been noted on sections of Little Roaring Beach and an additional coastal site.

Samples Gathered for Examination

Samples have been gathered and sent to the environmental agency for examination. A spokesperson stated that "algal blooms are a natural occurrence in response to shifts in nutrients, warmth, rain or light".

"They are sometimes called red or pink tides because the blooms can color the water red," the representative added. "Few phytoplankton events are harmful, with numerous types acting as a primary source of nourishment for animals in the marine food web."

"The usual source of red tides in Tasmanian waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause bioluminescent light displays at night."

Growing Occurrence Connected to Environmental Shifts

Phytoplankton proliferations are natural events but their rate has increased in the past few years, in part due to climate change and environmental waste that merge to create mineral-filled seas primed for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that normally act as the ocean's waste processors. During a proliferation, there is a quick expansion in their colonies that disrupts the normal functioning of aquatic systems.

These events have been equated with subsurface wildfires and can keep expanding as long as circumstances are favorable. In more extreme scenarios, vulnerable aquatic environments can be wiped out as sea creatures is eliminated or smothered, providing more food for the outbreak.

Past Catastrophic Outbreak in South Australia

A southern state in the past confronted a catastrophic algal bloom along its southern shore after a series of oceanic warm spells, which extended across an extensive zone. The event resulted in swimmers with eye irritation and persistent coughs and may have killed up to a quarter-million sea creatures across hundreds of species, according to official estimates.

Scientist Opinion on the Current Situation

An estuarine ecologist, who assisted in examining the beginning of the previous algal bloom stated, based on pictures of the local event, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a kind of dinoflagellate also known as "ocean glitter".

"There are lots of these outbreaks around Tassie of late," she added.

The expert said this organism did not create toxins like the species involved in that severe outbreak, but it does eat tiny creatures and "many fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were particularly vulnerable.

"Typically one notices a bloom of this algae after a proliferation of a different species, or something like a fish reproduction," she noted.

Appeals for Response and Public Safety

A campaigner, who gathered specimens of the rosy slime in the state, stated it seemed the suspected bloom had "grown significantly" and proposed the salmon farming industry was the most likely culprit, pointing to comparable events elsewhere.

"So the state needs to deliver a clear message here, the government and the EPA need to respond to this. We need to examine the samples we've collected and we need to put word out the public here," she emphasized.

She stated she had concerns for people's well-being after feeling a numbness along her arms and face while being exposed with tainted seawater.

Reports of Dead Animals and Demands for Government Response

An environmental foundation has stated deceased sea creatures and expired organisms washing ashore, with a longtime environmental campaigner labeling the circumstances as an "ecological crisis" and demanding the state premier to visit and "take control the response that government must be making".

"He needs to understand this is a crisis in the making, financially as well as for nature."

Leadership Reaction

Speaking to reporters, the premier stated he was not aware of any relationships between the algal bloom and the salmon industry, saying expert examination was necessary before determinations could be reached.

"We need to ensure our rivers and seas are safe for nature and viable," he said.

"The 1,200 beaches across the state are our assets and we need to guarantee the community and our economy can coexist to utilize our aquatic resources productively and responsibly."
