French authorities will start stopping small boats in Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the President asking him to back the plan and saying there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've picked up their migrants, according to official confirmation.
French authorities have rarely intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered excessively high a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Now, a French naval police representative states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had previously been suggested as a possible method to snarl the propellers of the boats.
The decision to take action at all is a major advancement, coming after a brief shift towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which dropped off when the previous government official departed from government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when French police were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to stop boats prior to they collect migrant passengers from the beaches of northern France, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently delaying the start of interceptions and the human trafficking gangs will be seeking ways to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
