The White House disclosed the start of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, making good on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to communities nationwide,” said a national union president, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government running,” the advocate stated. “Our air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”
